SMALL CHANGE, BIG IMPACT: $15,000 RAISED FOR NORTHWEST INDIANA!

At United Way Northwest Indiana, we are continually reminded of the strength and generosity of our community—and this summer, that generosity truly shined.

Thanks to our incredible partners at Strack & Van Til and the many customers who chose to round up their purchases at checkout, we are proud to announce that together, we raised an incredible $15,000 in support of our mission to build a stronger, more resilient Northwest Indiana.

The Power of Spare Change

It may have seemed like just a few cents here and there, but every time someone chose to round up, they were taking a meaningful step toward real, lasting change. The funds raised directly support programs focused on:

  • Youth Opportunities – Giving children and teens the resources, mentorship, and support they need to thrive in school and in life.

  • Financial Stability – Helping individuals and families access job training, housing assistance, and financial tools that lead to independence.

  • Healthy Communities – Promoting wellness, access to healthcare, and food security for people of all ages.

  • Resilient Communities – Supporting families facing hardship and connecting them to services that help them recover, rebuild, and move forward.

This work isn’t possible without the community’s support—and the $15,000 raised through this campaign proves what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose.

A Special Thank You to Strack & Van Til

We are deeply grateful to Strack & Van Til for championing this initiative and providing their customers with the opportunity to make a difference every time they shopped. Their continued commitment to local impact and corporate citizenship is what makes them such an invaluable partner in our work.

To the cashiers who asked every single time, the store managers who encouraged participation, and the leadership team who made it all possible—thank you for helping create a culture of giving right at the checkout line.

To Our Donors: You Made This Happen

Whether you gave $0.02 or $2.00, your donation is part of something much bigger. You helped us raise vital funds that will go directly back into the communities where you live, work, and raise your families. You showed up for your neighbors—and we are so grateful.

What’s Next?

Our work is far from over. This campaign is just one of many ways we continue to support and uplift Northwest Indiana. If this campaign inspired you, we encourage you to stay connected, learn more about our programs, and explore additional ways to get involved—whether through giving, advocating, or volunteering.

Valparaiso, IN – June 5, 2025 – United Way Northwest Indiana is thrilled to announce the return of Day of Caring, the Region’s largest single-day volunteer event, on Friday, August 1, 2025—presented by NIPSCO. After a two-year hiatus, this signature event returns stronger than ever with a renewed commitment to community service and regional collaboration.

In 2022, Day of Caring brought together more than 1,000 volunteers across Lake and Porter Counties. This year’s relaunch promises to be even bigger, uniting volunteers across Lake, Porter, Jasper, Newton, and Starke Counties to complete dozens of high-impact projects that will uplift local nonprofits, schools, and public spaces.

A Day to Make a Difference

The day will kick off at 8 AM with an energizing breakfast at Avalon Manor in Hobart, featuring a live DJ, t-shirt distribution, and an inspirational gathering to launch the day’s activities. From there, volunteers will head to project sites throughout the Region, supported by United Way staff and team leaders.

“Day of Caring has always been a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together,” said Chris White, CEO of United Way Northwest Indiana. “This year’s relaunch is more than just a return—it’s a renewed call to action for our entire Region.”

The enhanced digital platform makes it easier than ever for individuals and groups to find year-round volunteer opportunities with partner agencies across the five-county service area.

“Our new volunteer portal will be a game-changer for local engagement,” added Evelyn Harris, Director of Volunteer Services for United Way Northwest Indiana. “Whether it’s for Day of Caring or another important project that impacts the Region, people will have the tools to make a difference when and where it matters most.”

UNITED WAY NORTHWEST INDIANA PARTICIPATES IN AMERICA SAVES WEEK 2025

United Way Northwest Indiana was proud to participate in America Saves Week, a national campaign that empowers individuals, families, and communities to check in on their financial wellbeing. The 2025 theme, “Saving for Your Past, Present, and Future,” highlighted how financial habits today can impact all aspects of life—from emergency savings to retirement planning.

This year’s campaign ran from April 7–11 and covered key financial topics like building an emergency fund, managing debt, utilizing employer financial wellness benefits, and reducing the mental and emotional toll of financial stress. It also explored practical strategies like automatic savings and engaging in meaningful money conversations with loved ones.

Locally, United Way Northwest Indiana teamed up with CoAction at their Crown Point facility to provide in-person support, financial tools, and expert advice. These resources were designed to help individuals build financial confidence, even in the face of rising costs and ongoing economic challenges.

“With inflation and high interest rates continuing to impact households across our region, it’s more important than ever to have open conversations about money and practical plans for saving,” said Freya Churchwell, Level Up Financial Counselor at United Way Northwest Indiana. “Through America Saves Week, we’re giving people the resources to take action—whether they’re just starting to save or looking to get back on track.”

Throughout the week, United Way Northwest Indiana engaged with the community through local events—helping residents take that next step toward greater financial security.

“United Way Northwest Indiana’s participation in America Saves Week is a testament to their commitment to the community. We’ll all be better prepared with savings when the next emergency arises,” said Trish, a local saver.
